CAN WE SAVE CYBERSPACE FROM ITSELF? Protecting Consumers and Citizens in a Time of Rising Threats

Join the School of International Service’s US Foreign Policy and National Security Program, the Internet Governance Lab, and the Jean Monnet Centre for Excellence for a discussion with Tara Wheeler of the New American Foundation and consumer rights expert Adam Levin on the current problems in cybersecurity, including cyber crime, data breaches, and the erosion of trust in the Internet.

Ms. Wheeler is Cybersecurity Policy Fellow at New American where she leads a new international cybersecurity capacity-building project. She is a contributing cybersecurity expert for the Washington Post and a Foreign Policy contributor on cyber warfare. She is the lead author of the best-selling Women in Tech: take Your Career to The Next Level with Practical Advice and Inspiring Stories. She is an information security researcher, political scientist in the area of international conflict, author, and poker player. She has been Senior Director, Data Trust & Threat and Vulnerability Management at Splunk & Senior Director of Engineering and Principal Security Advocate at Symantec Website Security. She has led projects at Microsoft Game Studios (Halo and Lips) and architected systems at encrypted mobile communications firm Silent Circle. She has spoken on information security at the European Union, for Foreign Policy, the OECD and FTC, at Stanford and Oxford, on PBS NOVA, and many other governmental and industry conferences.

Adam K. Levin is a nationally recognized expert on cyber security, privacy, identity theft, fraud, and personal finance and has distinguished himself as a fierce consumer advocate for the past 40 years. Former Director of the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, Levin is chairman and founder of CyberScout and co-founder of Credit.com. He is author of the critically acclaimed book, Swiped: How to Protect Yourself in a World Full of Scammers, Phishers, and Identity Thieves. Levin’s mission is to educate consumers, businesses, law enforcement officials and lawmakers on identity management and protection, privacy, credit, and election security issues. His weekly column has appeared on ABC News, The Huffington Post, Yahoo!, AOL, MSN, and MarketWatch. He has appeared on The Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS Evening News, CNBC Closing Bell, MSNBC, Fox Business, Fox & Friends, ABC World News Tonight, ABC News Nightline, PBS Nightly Business Report, and many others. A graduate of Stanford University and the University of Michigan School of Law, Levin is a highly south-after speaker who, during his career in the public and private sectors, has shared his expertise with numerous state and federal regulators and legislative committees, and appeared before a wide variety of organizations — government, law enforcement, public interest, educations, human resources, insurance and financial services — throughout the United States and Europe.
