The Internet Governance Lab Roundtable Speaker Series closes out its spring calendar with Dr. Tijana Milosevic, Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Media and Communication at the University of Oslo, presenting her work on children’s wellbeing and digital media. Dr. Milosevic, who received her PhD from American University in 2015 and was among the first Internet Governance Lab Doctoral Fellows, is one of the leading global scholars focusing on the intersection of children and digital media. Her book, “Protecting Children Online? Cyberbullying Policies of Social Media Companies,” part of MIT Press’ Information Society Series, is a first-of-its-kind analysis of the policies and mechanisms that social media companies such as Facebook, Twitter, and Ask.fm, among many others, use to address digital bullying. In addition to raising questions about the effectiveness of the current self-regulatory environment and what it takes to create a space for more dignified online relations, Dr. Milosevic has also studied media coverage of cyberbullying in the US mainstream media and conducted work on a range of topics from media coverage of the Iraq War to climate change, public diplomacy, and the effects of copyright policies on visual arts communities in the US.

In addition to her experience in the US, Dr. Milosevic has lectured in Serbia and worked outside of academia. She interned and worked at media organizations, such as the BBC and Radio Free Europe; public affairs and public diplomacy organizations like Fleishman-Hillard and The Public Diplomacy Council; and at the French International School in Belgrade, where she was a teacher with children aged 3 to 12, which sparked her interest in understanding their behavior, especially in reference to digital media.
