A new study, co-authored by Internet Governance Lab Co-Director Professor Derrick Cogburn and Senior Research Associates Theodore Andrew Ochieng and Haiman M. Wong, has been published in the Journal of Cyber Policy. The publication explores the relationship between the Domain Name System (DNS) and the contemporary cyber landscape. Focusing on the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Uniform Domain-Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP), the Internet Governance Lab team assessed its capacity to empower private entities in managing domain-name disputes.

Using data provided by DNS Research Federation’s Data Analytics Platform (DAP.Live) and inductive text-mining techniques, the team found evidence affirming the ongoing stability of the UDRP. While trademark holders win 90% of complaints, successfully contested cases showcase the UDRP’s capacity to support non-trademark holders.
