IGL Director & Kogod Join New Consortium on AI Safety

American University’s Internet Governance Lab (IGL) Co-Director and Kogod School of Business Information Technology & Analytics Professor, Dr. Derrick L. Cogburn, will contribute to a new consortium dedicated to AI safety. In an effort to enhance public safety, foster innovation, and minimize risk, The U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is launching the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC). The new association will facilitate research to advance the development of safe and reliable AI systems. AISIC’s inaugural invitee list is comprised of notable Fortune 500 companies, top research universities, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. Consortium members will collaborate with NIST in refining current strategies, ensuring the sustainability of new approaches, and broadening the scope of research to encompass the inevitable future developments in the world of AI.

Dr. Derrick L. Cogburn holds numerous positions within American University, making him a multifaceted asset to AISIC’s objectives. He is a notable Environment, Development, & Health scholar in the School of International Service, as well as Executive Director of the Institute on Disability and Public Policy (IDPP). As an active member of the Global Academic Network of the Center for AI and Digital Policy (CAIDP), Dr. Cogburn’s expertise will be invaluable to the collaborative work to be conducted within AISIC.

Several reputable scholars within the American University Kogod School of Business will take part in the launch of this consortium on AI safety. These participants include Dr. Alberto EspinosaDr. Derrick L. CogburnDr. Shawn JanzenDr. Gwanhoo LeeAngela Virtu, and Jiali Zhou. The Kogod School of Business will also be joined by the most prominent technology stakeholders and investors in artificial intelligence: Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft.
