The Department of Environment, Development, and Health (EDH) at American University launches its new What Is SustAInable? series with “AI & Climate: Challenges, Opportunities & Risks,” and the Internet Governance Lab (IGL) highlights Faculty Co-Director Prof. Derrick L. Cogburn as a featured speaker. The conversation takes place on November 17 in MGSC 305 and focuses on the growing influence of artificial intelligence in climate governance.
Prof. Cogburn appears alongside former U.S. climate diplomat Erwin Rose, who draws on his experience advising the United States in United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations. Together, they consider how AI is influencing climate governance, sustainability decisions, and environmental policy analysis.
The event frames AI as both an opportunity and a challenge for climate action and underscores the need for responsible governance, interdisciplinary collaboration, and globally coordinated approaches. IGL remains engaged in advancing research that supports transparent, inclusive, and accountable use of emerging technologies.
