Doctoral Researcher Erica Diya Basu presented “Protecting Children’s Data in the Digital Era: The India Story” at the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce-Thailand Ministry of Data Economy & Society Workshop “Developing ASEAN Guidelines and Promoting Awareness on Child and Youth Online Risk” in Bangkok, Thailand from August 23-24, 2018. The Workshop was the first in a series of planned seminars to address digital issues and challenges confronting societies of the ASEAN region.

Lab Faculty Co-Teach "Cyber Flash Points" Seminar on Global Cyber Governance

Internet Governance Lab Director Dr. Laura DeNardis, AU School of Communication Professor, and Faculty Fellow Jennifer Daskal, Associate Professor of Law at AU Washington College of Law, are co-teaching the COMM-696/LAW-795CY weekly seminar "Cyber Flash Points" this semester, which examines the growing body of interdisciplinary literature and theory around global cyber governance. Each class opens with a 15-minute flash talk explaining how the technical architecture of the Internet works.

Internet Governance Lab Doctoral Researcher Erica Diya Basu presented her initial work-in-progress findings from her field research at the 20th edition of the Annenberg-Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute at the University of Oxford on August 3, 2018. Her PhD research examines the role of civil society organizations in shaping digital privacy discourse and influencing data protection policies in India.

Internet Gov Lab Welcomes New Associate Director and Doctoral Researcher

The AU Internet Governance Lab is pleased to welcome its inaugural Associate Director Dr. Kenneth Merrill to its team, as well as Doctoral Researcher Asvatha Babu this year. Both will play integral roles in advancing the research agenda and programmatic offerings of the Lab. Dr. Merrill holds a PhD in communication from American University (AU)’s School of Communication (SOC), and Ms. Babu is a PhD student at SOC and graduated with her MA from the AU School of International Service.

Faculty Fellow Dr. Aram Sinnreich Authors Policy Brief on Data Privacy

Internet Governance Lab Faculty Fellow Dr. Aram Sinnreich has authored the Policy Briefing Note An International Approach to Data Privacy published by the Center for Media and Social Impact at American University's School of Communication. In the wake of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and recent events which have unfolded surrounding Facebook and Cambridge Analytica, this policy brief argues that an international approach to standardizing and coordinating data protection policy is key to restoring data security.

Guest Talk on ICT Policies and Regulation in India

On Friday, July 13, the AU Internet Governance Lab hosted a guest talk by Dr. V. Sridhar, Professor at the Centre for IT and Public Policy at the International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIIT-B) in India, entitled "ICT Policies and Regulation: Is India Different from Other Countries?" Dr. Sridhar's talk focused on radio spectrum management, net neutrality regulation, regulation of the app economy, and privacy regulation.

Student Scholar Fernanda Rosa Wins TPRC46 Student Paper Competition

Internet Governance Lab Doctoral Researcher Fernanda Rosa is one of three winners of the 46th Research Conference on Communications, Information, and Internet Policy (TPRC46) Student Paper Competition. Her paper is entitled "Internet Node as a Network of Relationships: Sociotechnical Aspects of an Internet Exchange Point." As part of this distinction, she receives sponsorship to attend the conference from September 21-22, 2018 at American University Washington College of Law; will present her paper at the prestigious conference; and will attend an Awards Luncheon.

Faculty Director Dr. Laura DeNardis is serving as a lead speaker and moderator at the 2018 State of the Field Workshop on the Digital Transformation hosted by the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University on June 15, 2018. She is moderating the panel “Platforms and Governance Issues in the Digital Age” and is serving as a lead speaker on the panel “Internet of Things and Governance in the Digital Age.”
