IGL Director & Kogod Join New Consortium on AI Safety

In an effort to enhance public safety, foster innovation, and minimize risk, The U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is launching the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC). Several reputable scholars within the American University Kogod School of Business will take part in the launch of this consortium on AI safety.

Internet Governance Lab Distinguished Fellow Fiona Alexander to Participate at the annual Internet Governance Forum.

On October 9th, Fiona Alexander, a Distinguished Fellow from the Internet Governance Lab, will participate in the session “DC-DNSI Closing the Governance Gaps: New Paradigms for a Safer Domain Name System,” at the annual Internet Governance Forum. The session will discuss how the Domain Name System plays a role in internet safety and both public and private led efforts to combat Domain Name System related threats.

The Internet Governance Forum is a global platform for stakeholders to discuss internet-related public policy issues. This year they will be hosting their annual forum virtually and in Kyoto.

Internet Governance Lab to Participate at the Annual GigaNet Symposium, Kyoto, Japan and online

On October 8th, Internet Governance Lab Co-Director Professor Nanette S. Levinson and Doctoral Research Fellow Kimberly Anastacio will present their papers at the Annual GigaNet Symposium, hosted in Kyoto, Japan and online. Our other Co-Director, Professor Derrick L. Cogburn, will participate virtually in GigaNet and the IGF, with a focus on the six sessions on accessibility and inclusion, including those organized by the Dynamic Coalition on Accessibility and Disability (DCAD).

Professor Levinson will present the paper, “Institutional Change in Cyber Governance? Catalytic Factors & The United Nations Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG)” virtually. Doctoral Research Fellow Kimberly Anastacio will be presenting her paper, “ICT Standards and the Environment: a call of action for environmental care inside Internet Governance,” in Kyoto.

Internet Governance Lab Co-Director Nanette Levinson Presents Paper at the International Studies Association Virtual Conference

On August 2nd, Professor Nanette S. Levinson, one of the two faculty directors of the Internet Governance Lab, and also the Academic Director of the SIS-Sciences-Po (Paris) Exchange, presented a paper entitled “Inclusion Changes and Challenges at the United Nations: Reframing Emerging Cybersecurity Debates” at the International Studies Association Virtual Conference. During this same meeting, she also served as the Discussant for the Panel on “Why Institutional Design Matters: Causes and Debates.”

The Internet Governance Lab is looking for new junior fellows from American University. Our last year’s cohort, 3 first-year and 1 second-year undergraduate students, have been involved in several (unpaid) projects including interviewing and conducting podcasts with high-level Internet Governance leaders and a research project in collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
